Baby Massage Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What if my baby cries during the class?

A. Not a problem! All babies cry at times,  just do whatever  baby needs you to do.

Q. What if my baby is asleep during the class?

A. Not a problem! We have some spare dolls you can practice with. Or simply watch the instructor and practice at home with your handouts.

Q. What can I use to  massage my baby?

A. IAIM recommend a scent-free vegetable oil, preferably cold pressed and organic.
One example of a readily available and acceptable oil from your supermarket is sunflower oil.
Olive oil is not recommended for use on infant skin.

Q. What age can I start massaging my baby?

A. You can start from birth, and attend classes as soon as you feel able! It can be overwhelming in the first few weeks so don't rush into it. Classes are suitable for babies up to 1 year old.

Q.  Are there times I can't massage?

A. Massage should not be given to babies who are sleeping (we all need quality sleep), feeding, or crying. If Baby is crying then they need something else (feed, sleep, cuddle etc). Massage should also be avaoided when Baby has a temperature. Or when they are saying 'No!'

During the classses you will learn the cues that may mean No.

Q. When should I massage?

A. Find a time during your day that suits you both, but baby should be awake and ready to recieve massage. Many families like to incorporate it into the bedtime routine, but it can be at anytime of the day as long a baby says 'Yes!'

Q. What age should I stop massaging?

A. NEVER! As long as your baby (toddler, child, teenager) is happy to recieve a massage keep going! Remember it is their choice to recieve a massage, but a good beginning never ends!

Q. Where can I get more onformation about Baby Massage and its benefits?
